Anime loves to exaggerate personality types, sometimes. And even though this type isn’t a “dere”, Innocent characters share certain traits.
They’re kind hearted, gentle, pure, don’t wish any harm on anyone, and have a LOT of empathy.
These types of anime characters are thoughtful and would make good friends and you can put your trust in them.
Here’s some relevant characters worth mentioning.
1. Sumi Sakurasawa (Rent A Girlfriend)
Sumi Chan, or Sumi Sakurasawa makes her appearance in the 11th episode. In fact – this episode is dedicated entirely to her having screen time.
She’s not as confident as any other characters in Rent A Girlfriend, not even Kazuya.
Her past is a mystery but it plays a role in her innocence, kindness, extreme introversion and caring personality.
2. Latina (If It’s For My Daughter)
Latina is one of the main characters of this laid back, fantasy series. With a focus on a human father and a demon daughter.
With no parents to go to (they’re killed), Latina’s new life with humans is uncomfortable and strange. But she picks up on the mannerisms and language faster than expected.
The anime shows you the world through her eyes as she grows up and warms into her new found life.
There’s few slice of life that are as heart-warming as this one.
3. Hinata Hyuga (Naruto)
Hinata Hyuga is a relevant member of the Hyuga clan in Naruto.
She grows up shunned, doubted, and treated lesser because she doesn’t meet up to expectations and pressures.
From the beginning of Naruto until end, Hinata grows and develops, but her innocence, gentle heart and empathetic nature never changes.
Growing up being judged by others, Hinata is the last person to judge without context. And is a person that can be trusted with secrets.
4. Hifumi Takimoto (New Game!)
Hifumi Takimoto is a star of the show for a reason. Even if she’s not the main character of New Game!
She’s your typical introvert. Keeps to herself, only speaks when she feels it’s necessary, and works harder than most would expect.
But there’s something different about her personality. Given the anime’s context, she works in a gaming company and cosplay’s in secret.
5. Shirley (Code Geass)
Shirley is a memorable character from Code Geass. Straight from season 1 till season 2, even as a support character.
She’s the type to think of others and isn’t selfish at all. A little hesitant at times but always has pure intentions.
Without saying or spoiling too much, it’s no wonder why Shirley is remembered. Besides being from an iconic series.
6. Hina (Barakamon)
Hina from Barakamon is Naru’s friend. Naru is a main character and Hina is a support character.
We’re talking characters who are at least 7 or 8 years old. The stage where someone is more likely to be pure of heart.
Hina cries a lot and is more sensitive than your average anime character (or kid) in anime.
7. Emilia (Re:Zero)
Emilia gets a lot of hate, mostly from season 1. But things have changed a lot since season 2.
Being the main character she’s the highlight of the series, literally. And is still one of the purest characters the show has produced.
In some ways that makes her vulnerable and an easy target when it comes to matters of the heart.
But she’s firm ad actually doesn’t tolerate any B.S in spite of it.
8. Madoka Kaname (Madoka Magica)
Madoka Kaname is a main character but you could even call her a dual main character. Homura Akemi (other MC) is one half of the series.
Madoka is an ordinary girl who doesn’t think much of herself, but not in a negative or toxic way.
She doesn’t think she’s talented or special, and doesn’t believe she’ll achieve much in life. But after becoming a magical girl, that changes. But her kindness doesn’t.
That’s true until the very end.
9. Sun Seto (My Bride Is A Mermaid)
Sun Seto is engaged to a boy who almost drowns in the sea (who she saves).
Sun’s respectful to others and has high standards when it comes to morals and ethics. And even though she’s gentle, there are lines she won’t allow anyone to cross.
The blend of confidence, innocence, being firm and standing for something is what makes her unique on this list.
10. Petra Leyte (Re:Zero)
Petra is one of the newest characters introduced in Re:Zero in 2020. She’s a maid for Roswaal’s mansion.
Working under Frederica, she plays some important roles in the first half of Re:Zero. Even as a character who gets little screen time.
Her innocence is similar to Latina’s from If It’s For My Daughter.
11. Allen Walker (D. Gray Man)
Allen Walker is different not just because he’s a male character, but because his life experiences are so drastic.
He’s a Shonen protagonist and like many, he’s had his fair share of hardships and pain.
Even with all of his struggles, he still manages to be so kind and remain pure of heart. Without tainting his morals or compromising his ethics.
That’s what makes Allen Walker so different to other Shonen protagonists.
12. Wendy Marvell (Fairy Tail)
Wendy Marvell is the youngest dragon slayer associated with Natsu. And unlike Gajeel, she’s still got her innocence.
Soft on the outside, tough on the inside. Would rather avoid a fight than get into one. And cares deeply for people.
Wendy is one of the most underrated Fairy Tail characters for me. Especially considering how she grows as a character.
13. Akari Mizunashi (Aria The Animation)
Akari Mizunashi can be seen as a person who’s lost in the beauty of life. Never having anything bad or negative to say about people or life itself.
She’s not unrealistic. She’s aware of things and doesn’t try to downplay bad things. It’s just she chooses to focus on the positive.
As pointed out by Aika, another character from the anime, Akari is sappy and tends to be sensitive about things.
14. Izuku Midoriya (My Hero Academia)
Izuku Midoriya, known as Deku is one of the most famous characters on this list. He’s too kind for his own good.
We see this in his backstory with Bakugo. And even in the present story, Deku can be too gentle sometimes. Especially with Bakugo’s bullsh*t.
The way Deku grows and develops as a character though is clear. He’s a solid protagonist and one of the best I’ve seen in recent Shonen.
15. Atsushi Nakajima (Bungou Stray Dogs)
Atsushi Nakajima grew up an orphan, and is treated like dog sh*t laying on the side of the road.
He’s blamed for everything that goes wrong as an orphan, and if I remember right is kicked out the orphanage.
You’d expect a person like this to be filled with rage and anger, but surprisingly it’s the opposite. Cares for others, but has little self esteem in the beginning.
16. Ayumi Otosaka (Charlotte)
Ayumi Otosaka is the younger sister of Yuu, the main character of Charlotte.
She’s seen making hilarious Pizza dishes for her brother. With her “special sauce” thrown on top.
In Yuu’s eyes she’s a giddy, overly energetic little sister. But he appreciates her more than he tells her.
17. Kotomi Ichinose (Clannad)
Kotomi Ichinose is absorbed in books, and is always at the library in school. Mostly in season 1.
Books are so important to her because she values education and personal development.
It’s not until she meets Tomoyo that she regularly chills with friends and learns to appreciate aspects of life she never thought to before.
18. Nagisa Furukawa (Clannad)
Nagisa Furukawa, besides Kotomi, is the most innocent character of the series. And physically the weakest.
Comparable to someone like Madoka Kaname for how she thinks of others and doesn’t have a bad bone in her body.
She ends up in a relationship with the main character: Tomoyo, and season 2 is where things change drastically.
19. Yuki Takeya (Gakkou Gurashi)
Yuki Takeya isn’t the kind of person who’d allow bad things to get her down, or make her depressed. The irony is this is literally what happens.
This anime highlights PTSD and mental illness. Yuki Takeya has a mental illness because to deal with her trauma, she downplays what “reality” is telling her.
This makes Yuki Takeya, and the anime, one of the most meaningful. It’s deep, and not many anime explore these themes on the level of Gakkou Gurashi.
Even with all that she’s still innocent and pure like no other.
20. Azmaria Hendric (Chrono Crusade)
Azmaria Hendric is one of the support characters for this demon/religious series.
She’s had a tough upbringing and dealt with unreasonable challenges in life. And somehow has the heart to forgive easier than most.
While she has low self esteem, more so in the beginning, she puts others before herself and generally is a positive person.
Music is Azmaria’s escape. She can sing and that helps her deal with her pain, and it does the same for others.
Other Characters:Anzu Shiina (Flying Witch). Onna (Goblin Slayer). Tami Nishimakado (Hanayamata). Kanade Jinguji (Best Student Council). Kosaki Onodera (Nisekoi).
